October 2023 to September 2024
This project is essential to prevent a significant risk of biodiversity loss in a strategically important area like Loliondo, between the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. The competition for grazing resources, exacerbated by disorganized land use practices, is a pressing concern. Moreover, the consequences of these factors manifest in increased poverty levels and escalating conflicts within the region. The need to address these challenges promptly and effectively is crucial to ensure the preservation of the area’s unique biodiversity, the sustainable use of resources, and the well-being of the local communities.
The primary aim of this project is to foster unity among the Maasai communities in Ngorongoro District, enabling them to collaboratively strategize on engaging with the government and various stakeholders. The overall goal is to find optimal solutions for resolving land disputes, which may involve reclaiming land rights for the communities or formalising harmonious coexistence with the natural environment.
This project is funded by Global Greengrants Fund.
